Reap These Health Benefits from Drinking Bourbon

It’s common knowledge that wine contains an array of health benefits, particularly when it comes to heart health. However, wine isn’t the only alcoholic drink that can contribute positively to one’s health. Bourbon whisky can actually be beneficial to physical health as well. You’ll come to find that in certain aspects, bourbon is actually healthier than wine! Find out the health benefits you can reap when you consume bourbon in moderation, at the recommended serving per day!

How much bourbon is too much bourbon?

When talking about moderation, it may be difficult to discern just how much is too much. However, with bourbon, there is a set measurement.

The recommended serving of bourbon per day is a mere 1.5 ounces, or the equivalent of one shot. This is how much you should consume in order to gain the health positives from the spirit. Drinking any more is not guaranteed to result in more health benefits. In fact, it may actually do the opposite.

Health benefits you can reap from bourbon

Diabetes aid

You may think that bourbon will be detrimental to diabetics because of how sweet it is. However, there is a game-changing element in bourbon which helps aid with diabetes.

Ellagic acid is a form of antioxidant. Wine is also known for containing high levels of antioxidant; however, bourbon actually contains more!

Diabetics struggle with blood sugar levels. However, studies have shown that intake of ellagic acid reduces blood sugar levels and insulin over time. Similar to wine, these antioxidants help to regulate insulin levels in the body and glucose levels in the liver.

Stress relief

It’s no surprise that alcohol can reduce stress levels. That’s why happy hours exist after work hours. However, it’s important to drink in moderation and not create a dependency!

Drinking a shot of bourbon is said to calm you down at the end of a long, stressful day. This spirit also has qualities that will soothe nerves and ease tension by improving overall blood circulation.

Brain power-up

Many creatives swear by the “write drunk, edit sober” philosophy. To each their own, of course! If you’re looking for some creative juice, bourbon is scientifically proven to actually increase cognitive performance.

However, when consuming more than the recommended amount, you may risk getting intoxicated. This will just decrease your cognitive abilities instead of increasing them!

Cancer-free radicals

Diabetes isn’t the only serious illness that bourbon can help curb. The mash-based liquor can also help lower risks of cancer.

Antioxidants come back into play here. This element prevents the formation of free radicals in the body, which can become cancerous.

Weight loss aid

You may be familiar with the term “beer belly.” This is coined because alcohol does contain quite a large amount of calories which can contribute to weight gain. However, bourbon in moderation can actually help with weight loss.

This is because bourbon is gluten free. Seems impossible, right? Considering the base ingredients of the liquor are rye, barley, wheat, and other types of grains, bourbon should not be gluten free. However, thanks to the distillation process, the final result of bourbon is gluten free, meaning it’s low in carbs and sugar.

There are actually less calories present in bourbon than in beer or wine. According to the USDA, 1.5 shot of bourbon contains 97 calories. Compared to wine, 5 fluid ounces contains 123 calories!

Less hangover symptoms

Everyone is on a journey to drink without experiencing a hangover the next morning. There are several solutions to this. Aside from abstaining from alcohol or partaking in non-alcoholic drinks, bourbon is also a good way to drink without the intense consequences.

The liquor is far from hangover-proof, but it’s been scientifically proven to result in less severe hangover symptoms compared to other spirits.

Cholesterol balance

Similar to the health benefits of wine, whiskeys have high levels of polyphenols. This reduces bad cholesterol and increases levels of good cholesterol, also known as High-Density Lipoprotein (HDL). Bad cholesterol is what leads to heart disease, as it clogs up the blood vessels. Meanwhile, high levels of HDL clears up the pathways in the arteries.
