Understanding Champagne Sweetness Levels

Sure, champagne is one of the sweeter things in life, but did you know that there are levels to its sweetness? Champagne sweetness levels can greatly affect the taste and experience of your bubbly. Let’s take a look at the wide range of sweetness contained in a bottle of champagne and understand what makes each unique.

What determines champagne sweetness levels?

Sugar is the main factor of champagne’s sweetness levels. In champagne production, there is the dosage stage where sugar is added into the bottle before the champagne is corked.

Addition of sugar in the dosage stage defines the champagne’s sweetness, ranging from bone-dry to delectably sweet.

Levels of champagne sweetness

Now that you know what affects how sweet a champagne is, it’s time to break down the different levels of champagne sweetness.

1. Brut Nature and Extra Brut

At the driest end of the champagne sweetness level spectrum, we have Brut Nature and Extra Brut.

With no added sugar in the dosage stage, Brut Nature contains only 3 grams of sugar per litre and is very dry in taste. Meanwhile, Extra Brut is slightly sweeter, with up to 6 grams of sugar per litre.

These two types of champagne are a delight for those who enjoy a crisp, clean flavour in their bubbly.

2. Brut

Brut champagne is the most common and widely enjoyed champagne sweetness level.

There are up to 12 grams of sugar per litre in Brut champagne. It strikes the perfect balance between dryness and just a hint of sweetness. This champagne’s versatility enables it to pair well with a wide range of cuisines, which is why it’s a popular choice!

3. Extra Dry

You may think that the Extra Dry level is drier than Brut Nature and Extra Brut, but it’s actually sweeter!

Extra Dry champagne contains 12 to 17 grams of sugar per litre, offering a smooth and slightly sweet flavour. If you err on the sweeter side, this champagne is definitely for you.

4. Sec

With between 17 to 32 grams of sugar per litre, Sec champagne is of a moderate sweetness level.

While this sweetness is noticeable, it’s not overwhelming. It actually brings a pleasant balance that appeals to a wide range of palates and preferences.

5. Demi-Sec

Sweet toothed folks will delight in Demi-Sec champagne, said to be the type of champagne with the perfect sweetness level.

Demi-Sec contains 32 to 50 grams of sugar per litre, making it noticeably sweet and therefore more often enjoyed as a dessert wine. Its rich flavour makes it the perfect pairing for pastries and fruity desserts.

6. Doux

At the very end of the spectrum is Doux, the sweetest of all champagne sweetness levels.

Containing more than 50 grams of sugar per litre, Doux is a treat for those who are looking for the sweetest drink with enough bubbly. This champagne sweetness level is rare and usually reserved for special occasions and very particular food pairings.

Understanding the different levels of champagne sweetness can help you choose the perfect bottle for your palate and for the occasion you’re celebrating. There’s a level of sweetness available for everyone to enjoy!
